CBD oil and hemp oil – differences

First, we need to mention something that is probably obvious to most readers, but there may be some who have never heard of it – the difference between hemp seed oil and CBD oil.

Hemp seed oil – otherwise simply known as hemp oil is a product made from hemp seeds, as the name suggests. The most valuable oil is cold-pressed and unrefined, because it contains the most valuable substances. It perfectly moisturizes and allows active ingredients to penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin, it is a perfect carrier of active substances such as plant extracts or essential oils. The oil contains antioxidants, proteins, amino acids, carotene, phytosterols, phospholipids and minerals (including Ca, Mg, S, K, Fe, Zn and P) and vitamins – A, B1, B2, B3, C, D and E.

CBD oil, or CBD (cannabidiol) does not come from Hemp seeds! Hemp seeds contain very trace amounts of cannabinoids (in thousandths of a percent). CBD is obtained from the flowers (buds) of the Cannabis Sativa L. It has a strong antioxidant effect, regenerates age-related damage, helps to avoid harmful external factors on the skin, inhibits oxidation processes, and has anti-inflammatory properties.

These two concepts should not be confused, but both hemp products work well together. Seed oil is a fantastic carrier for CBD and cannabidiol perfectly complements the effects of the seed oil. Therefore, they often appear (or at least should appear) together in the composition.

What hemp products can be used on the skin?

Virtually all of them! Both the hemp seed oil itself, as well as CBD oil, as well as products that combine both of these ingredients. Ordinary hemp seed oil can be applied directly to, e.g. irritated areas. CBD oil, in turn, due to the high content of the active substance, will be a good solution for people with severe skin problems, e.g. acne or allergies. A very good solution is to use products that combine seed oil, CBD and other supporting plant extracts that complement their effects. It is a comprehensive solution at a very reasonable price (lower CBD content than CBD oil – the most expensive ingredient, but high content of seed oil along with other active ingredients supporting the product’s performance). At the same time, these are products designed only for lubricating / rubbing / massaging the surface of the skin, therefore they have appropriate physical and aromatic properties, are simply convenient to use – which is not without significance in frequent use.

Regarding hemp seed oil, via Polish Society of Atopic Diseases:

The chemical composition of hemp oil is very similar to the natural protective fat secreted by human skin (sebum), thanks to which, when used in cosmetic preparations, it improves lipid management, especially in seborrhoeic and acne-prone skin – sebum becomes thinner and does not block the sebaceous glands, which min. prevents acne lesions.

The dermatological and cosmetic activity of EFA is related to the possibility of incorporating them into the structures of intercellular cement, which results in the skin becoming more elastic, its barrier functions against harmful environmental factors (pollution, allergens, UV) are improved, TEWL is reduced and, as a result, improves the hydration of the epidermis and increases the production of anti-inflammatory factors.

EFA (Essential Fatty Acid) are the precursors of local hormones, including prostoglandins, which keep the skin in good shape and prevent premature aging.

The oil’s greenish color is the result of naturally occurring chlorophyll in the seeds, which has anti-inflammatory and soothing properties.

EFA deficiency causes the natural resistance of the skin to disappear from external factors, irritation, redness, discoloration, inflammation, seborrhea, acne, atopic eczema and psoriasis appear more often. The skin becomes dry (increased TEWL) and less elastic, which accelerates the formation of wrinkles.

Hemp oil, thanks to the high EFA content, has outstanding nutritional, immunostimulating, antiallergic, regenerative and anti-aging properties. It has a positive effect on the structure and appearance of the skin, which becomes more elastic and gets a nicer color, and all types of irritation and inflammation (psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, eczema) are alleviated.
